All about drinking November 4, 2008

The two guys were both from England – which was not difficult to find out because of their typical English accent – and stayed in Berlin for just some days.

During our conversation, several discussions arose and sometimes, one of the guys said politely: “I’m terribly sorry to interrupt you…” which we found quite funny. Another comment of the guys while discussing was: “I’ve been asking myself the same question.”

After a while they took delight in really searching important examples for a good bar conversation. And suddenly the phrases just spluttered out. They were now noting themselves the expressions they had in mind and explained us the meanings. “To drink like a fish” means to drink high volumes of alcohol. Because they were still thirsty they told us that they “were gagging for a drink”. Which lead them to the expression “to knock back a drink”. But obviously you can also say “to slam a drink”. When they realized that the list of words was growing, they said: “This calls for a drink”. They finally wanted to “celebrate our unforeseen conversation with another drink”. They were glad that they didn’t “hang around with other guys in the bar” because we would probably not have had “the heart to approach them”.
